Invalid DNS Server Address
Q:What could be the reason(s) behind getting an invalid DNS
Server Address in the Network Connection Detail Window in a
Windows environment, even though the network behaves normally
when the DNS Server addresses are mentioned statically?
A:Perhaps you have a DHCP server handing out the wrong DNS
server information when it grants your computer an IP address?
It could happen if the DNS server address you are being given is
being used by a machine with a DNS entry on the network, even if
that machine is not running a DNS server. Read Steve's entire
response http://www.networkworld.com/nlaskexp174165 .
VPN setup
Q:I have a VPN and I connect, but how can I connect as a static
IP node on the network just as if I were there plugged in? I
need other nodes to see me with a static IP address, just as if
I were on-site. I connect to the VPN through my wireless router
at home.
A:Depending on the flavor of VPN client software and VPN system
that you connect to at work, you could actually see more than
one IP address locally. I don't how easy it will be to get a
static IP for your remote workstations, however. Read Ron's
