USA Volleyball Names Boys' Youth National Training Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The USA Volleyball High Performance Department has announced the members of the 2009 Boys’ Youth National Training Team (BYNTT).
The top 12 players on the team will compete at the 2009 FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championships on Aug. 28-Sept. 6 in Bassano del Grappa and Jesolo, Italy.
The team will begin training in mid-August, most likely at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The team was compiled through high performance tryouts held throughout the country.
The head coach of the team will be Andy Read, the assistant men’s volleyball coach at Long Beach State. He will be assisted by Sean Byron (Ohio State) and Dan Friend (Lewis). The head of the U.S. delegation to the Boys’ Youth World Championships will be Ken Preston, the former men's head coach at UC Santa Barbara.
“This summer’s opportunity to represent USA Volleyball at the FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship in Italy is a major step in the development for these players for future national team and Olympic competition,” Read said. “Last summer’s success at the NORCECA Championship was their first step.”
The U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team won the 2008 NORCECA Continental Championship to qualify for the world championship. That team went 4-0 and did not lose a set.
