U.S. Women Battle for First Grand Prix Win
The U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team came back from two sets down to defeat Puerto Rico 3-2 (21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 15-13) on Saturday in an FIVB World Grand Prix pool play match at Maracanazihno Gym in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
With the victory, the U.S. Women overcame Friday's sweep by Germany and improved to 1-1 in Pool A. Puerto Rico falls to 0-2. Team USA will play host Brazil at 10 a.m. local time on Sunday.
The United States' Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) led all scorers with 27 points on a match-high 24 kills and three blocks. Kristin Richards (Orem, Utah) added 14 points on 12 kills and two blocks. Jordan Larson (Hooper, Neb.) contributed seven points on five kills, one block and one ace.
Aurea Cruz led Puerto Rico with 21 points on 17 kills, two blocks and two aces.
"We are very happy with this win, especially after our bad performance against Germany," U.S. Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon (Christchurch, New Zealand) said. "Puerto Rico has a good team and was really hard to beat. Now we have to start looking to Brazil. They will probably be our toughest opponent in this round."

U.S. Men’s Junior Team Tops Tunisia
The U.S. Men's Junior National Team came back from a first-set loss to defeat Tunisia 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21) on Saturday at the FIVB Men's Junior (U-21) World Championships at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune, India.
The U.S. Men's Junior Team improved its record to 2-0 in Pool A. It is schedule to play host India (1-1) in its final first-round pool match on Sunday at 5:30 a.m. PT. Tunisia falls to 0-2 in pool play.
The United States' Joe Sunder (Greensburg, Pa.) and Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) led all scorers with 17 points each. Sunder had 14 kills, two blocks and one ace. Troy added a match-high 15 kills and two blocks.

U.S. Women’s Teams Claim Silver, Bronze in Austria
Two U.S. women’s beach teams earned podium spots, while one men’s team advanced to the semifinal of the A1 Grand Slam 09 presented by Volksbank on Saturday in Klagenfurt, Austria.
Fourth-ranked Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) took the silver medal after an 0-2 (12-21, 15-21) loss to gold-medal winners, third-ranked Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva of Brazil. Branagh and Youngs advanced to the final after a close 2-0 (22-20, 21-17) semifinal win over fellow Americans Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.).
Kessy and Ross, seeded second, followed up the loss with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) win over ninth-ranked Sara Montagnolli and Barbara Hansel of Austria in the third-place match. The bronze medal marks the second consecutive podium appearance for the duo who won gold at the World Series 13 Grand Chelem in Marseille, France.
In the men’s tournament, Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) defeated sixth-seeded David Klemperer and Eric Koreng of Germany, 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) in the second elimination round to advance to the third round. They beat 12th-ranked Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz of Brazil, 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) to set up a semifinal matchup with 13th-seeded Igor Kolodinsky and Dmitri Barsouk of Russia.
