Bolstering BI With Web Data Services (33:11 minutes)
Perspective is what business intelligence brings to the table for
companies, and the better the data, the better the perspective. However,
the traffic in existing data warehouses, databases and data marts is
becoming difficult to manage by traditional means. Some CIOs are turning
to Web data services to build bridges across all these silos.

Today's Story Highlights

A Global Web Site Localization Primer
When an Indian company tried to sell its Swastika brand of clothing in
the West, it was not quite prepared for the backlash. In Hindu culture
the swastika is a highly revered religious symbol of peace and well
being. The trouble is, no one had done the necessary homework to find
out about how that word and symbol were perceived in the West.

Think, Then Measure: BI in the SMB
Suppliers and consumers have tightened their belts under current
economic conditions, sending businesses scrambling for cost-cutting
methods. Small and medium businesses have turned to business
intelligence tools in response to these pressures.

New Deveraux Romance Debuts as 'Vook'
The latest novel from best-selling romance author Jude Deveraux isn't
exactly a book. "Promises" is a reading-and-viewing experience, a
digital text in which videos not only complement the narrative but add
to it. "Promises" is one of four online video books being published
Thursday by Simon & Schuster in collaboration with Vook, a startup that
integrates text, video and social networking.

EC Prevails in Mobile Roaming Fee Fracas
The EU was entitled to cap roaming rates in 2007 as network operators
pocketed huge profits but resisted less drastic ways to cut the sky-high
costs of using mobile phones in Europe, the EU advocate general said
Thursday. The opinion by Advocate General Miguel Poiares Maduro now goes
to the European Court of Justice, which often follows that advice.

ViaSat to Pocket Wild Blue for $568M
ViaSat is acquiring Wild Blue Communications, a provider of high-speed
Internet access via satellite, for US$568 million in cash and stock, the
companies said Thursday. Privately held Wild Blue, in which Liberty
Media holds a 37 percent stake, will become an operating subsidiary of
ViaSat, which makes satellite communications equipment for defense and
consumer markets.

Judge Absolves Microsoft in $388M Patent Saga
For six years, Uniloc and Microsoft have duked it out in the courts over
charges that Microsoft infringed on Uniloc's patent. A jury said it did
and awarded Uniloc what was purported to be the fifth largest patent
verdict in history. However, in a 66-page decision, Rhode Island's
District Judge William Smith overturned the $388 million verdict.
