U.S. Men Can't Stop Italian Attack

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Italy used strong offense from Cristian Savani and Michal Lasko as it defeated the United States, 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 26-24) on Friday in an FIVB World League match before 4,310 at the Sears Centre.

Both teams now have records of 6-3; however Team USA maintains its lead in Pool A with a point lead of 18-17. The two teams will play again at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Sears Centre.

Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawai'i) paced Team USA with 16 points on 15 kills and one ace while Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) added 15 on 14 kills and one block. David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) scored 14 points on 10 kills and a match-high four blocks.

Lasko led all scorers with 18 points on a match-high 16 kills, one block and one ace. Savani added 16 on 15 kills and one ace. Italy had four players in double figures.

"Italy passed better and the definitely served better," U.S. Head Coach Alan Knipe (Huntington Beach, Calif.) said. "When you control passing and serving you are probably going to win the game."

Italy was credited with 99 percent positive receptions and 79 percent excellent. The United States was credited with 97 percent positive receptions and 63 percent excellent.

Italy converted 54 percent of its attack attempts (56/104) while Team USA converted 50 percent (51/103). Italy also had more aces (2-1) and more blocks (12-9).

"I'm disappointed with the result, obviously," Lee said. "This was a chance for us to secure the lead in Pool A… I thought we had a lot of mistakes, especially toward the end."

Branagh and Youngs Advance to Semifinals of Gstaad Grand Slam

Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) were the lone U.S. women's beach team to advance to the semifinals of the 2009 Gstaad Grand Slam in Switzerland, part of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour.

Branagh and Youngs got there by defeating Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr of Switzerland, 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) in the second round, and Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany, 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 15-12) in the third round on Friday.

Branagh and Youngs will square off against second-seeded Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Maria Antonelli of Brazil in the semifinals on July 11. If they win, they will advance to the championship match where they will play the winner of the semifinal between Marleen Van Iersel and Sanne Keizer of the Netherlands and Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva of Brazil.

In tonight's programme

============================================================
NEWSNIGHT - Friday 10 July 2009 - 22.30 BST - BBC TWO
============================================================

------------------------------------------------------------
Presented by Gavin Esler
------------------------------------------------------------

From Gavin Esler:

Hello,

With more deaths of British soldiers reported in Afghanistan we will be assessing whether the UK and US are pursuing the correct strategy. Is there any alternative? And has it become the classic guerrilla war in which all the Taliban has to do to win is not to lose ... and sap the morale of the outsiders who have come to pacify them?

Peter Marshall investigates the case of Nico Bento who was convicted of murder on the basis of CCTV evidence which is now being disputed by forensic experts.

And The News of the World - what was it like working at Wapping? Richard Watson will be reporting.

And then on Newsnight Review at 11pm:

Martha is the only straight in the village on Review tonight as the playwright Mark Ravenhill, columnist Johann Hari, author Stella Duffy and fashion writer and man-about-town Henry Conway join her for a very gay Friday night Review.

As the flamboyant fashion TV host Bruno unleashes his outfits on middle America, the panel will look at whether Sacha Baron Cohen's new film critiques or panders to homophobia.

And how did he get Paula Abdul to talk about human rights while using a Mexican gardener's back as a chair?

Mark Ravenhill makes the case that recent British TV comedy has dumped political correctness in favour of jokes about gays. Is he right? Or is the ability to laugh at a community a sign of its strength?

The National Portrait Gallery's new exhibition offers up a range of faces under the headline Gay Icons from Graham Taylor and Nelson Mandela to Princess Diana and The Village People.

Is there such a thing as a gay icon in this day and age?

And we look back at the documentary Before Stonewall which shows the secret life of homosexuals in 20th Century America. Forty years on from the riots at The Stonewall Inn, which started the gay rights movement, is gay culture now mainstream?

Join us at 11pm for all that.

Getting IT to Speak Business-ese (12:51 minutes)
For the most part, IT people tend to operate in their own space and
speak their own language. In many organizations, the department is
treated like its own silo, and it often doesn't report directly to the
CEO. As a result, IT is too often disconnected from the elements driving
the business. However, that reality is beginning to slowly change.

Jackson Memorial Brought Out Worst in Networks, Best in Web
On June 25th, many Americans learned about the death of Michael Jackson
from the Internet. They had already learned how to use social networks
to share that information -- and their grief -- with others, far
outpacing traditional television media. Apparently, the three main
broadcast works didn't learn anything from that day.

Little MacBook That Could, Batteries That Can't, Touch That Might
The Apple-focused blogosphere is still chugging along, even as the
summer sun starts pounding down. While Apple's new MacBooks have been
getting good reviews for the long lives of their built-in batteries, the
iPhone still isn't getting battery raves. More and more users seem to be
using external battery packs to give their iPhones a new boost of juice.

it's a complex formula that determines if and when.

Nearly a decade after a Department of State laptop containing highly

Coming up on Panorama

============================================================
PANORAMA
============================================================

------------------------------------------------------------
NEXT PANORAMA - LICENCE TO TORTURE - MONDAY 8.30PM ON BBC ONE
------------------------------------------------------------

* *

Hello there,

It is a juicy story of scandal at the heart of
journalism that has people talking this week. You can read the full story on the following BBC News website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8141615.stm

The Guardian has accused the News of the World of breaking the law by using private investigators to tap phones belonging to MPs, celebrities and leading figures in the sporting world. It alleges that the newspaper has paid out £1 million to settle legal cases.

At the heart of the story is the issue of privacy and the question over what the difference is between a story in the public interest and stories that the public find nteresting.

Panorama's recent look at the question of privacy delved into the world of litigation and asked whether Britain's privacy laws are limiting press freedom.

In The Death of Kiss and Tell, Clive Goodman reported on the impact high profile cases, often involving celebrities and the tabloid press, have had on curbing the press' right to tell stories over an individual's right to privacy.

If you missed the programme you can watch it on the Panorama website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00l7wlx
You will also find more information on the programme, including a video which puts you in the position of editor faced with some tough calls:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/front_page/newsid_8097000/8097699.stm.

POLICE AND PROTEST

The G8 have been meeting in Italy this week. Read about it on the BBC News website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8141715.stm

The last time the Italians played host to the summit, in 2001, riots resulted in the death of one protester in clashes with police in which hundreds were injured.

When the G20 came to London earlier this year the police seem prepared for any potential violence, but although the demonstrations were mainly peaceful, questions have since been raised about the Met's tactics on the day.

In Monday's programme, Panorama looked into the landscape of protest around the country following concerns about the G20 and asked, are people still free to take to the streets?

Speaking to campaigners from all backgrounds, from retired scientists to students, the programme exposed a creeping use of police surveillance powers to monitor lawful protests and those involved in campaigning.

Despite the diversity of the issues being campaigned about, all reported concerns over what they saw as a threat to their democratic right to protest, a charge strongly denied by the police.

If you missed the programme you can catch it on the BBC iPlayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lmd3s/Panorama_What_Ever_Happened_to_People_Power/

And for a quick summary of the problems protestors have experienced, watch our video extra on the Panorama website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/the_team/newsid_8132000/8132805.stm

BACK IN THE NEWS

This week has seen a roll call of deaths for military personnel operating in Afghanistan in the latest operation involving the British army.

Seven men have lost their lives in the last week in the assault against the Taliban. You can read about this on the BBC News website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8139858.stm.

Just this month, Panorama reporter John Sweeney was across the border in Pakistan where the country's army are fighting a similar battle against the Taliban in Swat Valley.

He travelled with the Pakistani army to the frontline of their attack, where he came under fire in the very real and dangerous battle the Pakistani's say they have to win to prevent civil war.

You can watch the programme on the Panorama website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/the_team/newsid_8132000/8132805.stm, where you can also find more information on
John's visit to Swat.

COMING UP: TORTURE CHARGES

Panorama has spent several months investigating the use of torture against terrorist suspects held by the UK.

Monday's programme will see the fruits of that investigation with reporter Hilary Andersson uncovering evidence that will fuel the debate on whether interrogators, lawyers or politicians should face charges for sanctioning interrogation techniques that may have broken international
law.

Licence to Torture is on Monday 13 July, BBC One at 8.30pm.

PANORAMA CALL OUT

Are migrants jumping the queue?

We are told that there is no bias in favour of migrants in the current social housing waiting list system. Is that true or do you know different?

The BBC would like to hear from people who have experience of social housing following a report from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission which said there is no evidence that new arrivals in the UK can jump the queue.

It has been a campaign issue for the British National Party and the government has said it will change policy in favour of local people. So is the belief that migrants get favourable treatment a myth?

Whether you've been on the receiving end of unfairness or are at the decision making end working for a local authority social housing provider, we'd like to hear from you.

If you are interested in telling us your story, email panorama@bbc.co.uk with the word HOUSING in the subject heading.

Your details will not be published but you might be contacted by a BBC researcher, so please remember to include a phone number or email address.

That's all for this week but you can keep up to date with Panorama on our website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/default.stm.

And remember you can e-mail us anytime at panorama@bbc.co.uk

The cost of not reaching IT project closure
All things, good and bad, eventually come to an end. Philosophers have told us this in many variations for at least three or four thousand years. In IT we seem to have exquisitely intricate plans for starting new things: projects, applications, users, policies. Yet we seem to always forget to plan for their eventual end: the closure of projects, the removal of applications, the retirement of servers and the departure of users. Why do we find it so hard to achieve closure?

BBC SPORT

------------------------------------------------------------
WAYNE GRADY ON THE SCOTTISH OPEN
------------------------------------------------------------

We are all enjoying a great start to the Scottish Open here at Loch
Lomond, which for me is the best inland course in Great Britain and may
even be one of the best in the world.

You can't help but enjoy being at this magnificent setting, especially
when scoring has been this good.

Australia's Adam Scott has been circling near the top of the leaderboard
and it's great to see his form returning.

He has slipped to 43rd in the world rankings and if you look at his
statistics you can see how badly his game has dipped.

Every stat is down: driving accuracy, greens in regulation, putting. It
is no surprise he hasn't been doing well.

Hopefully this will prove to be the turnaround and it will start off a
good second half of the season.

His new girlfriend, tennis star Ana Ivanovic, has been by his side this
week, so no wonder he has a smile on his face.

He is going to have a battle on his hands dealing with South Africa's
Retief Goosen though.

We all know what the Goose can do - he holds the course record here and
his putter seems to be working again.

Watch out for Nick Watney this weekend. A lot of good things are being
said about him in America and he is a very exciting young player.

After Sunday's final round we head to Turnberry for the 138th Open
Championship.

I played there in 1994 and it's my favourite course on the Open rota. It
is a good, solid, honest course and the setting is wonderful.

Outside of Tiger Woods, the field is wide open so it should be a great
tournament.

Enjoy your weekend.

It's Time to Fix the Firewall
It's no secret that modern applications and threats easily circumvent the traditional network firewall - so much so that enterprises have deployed an entire crop of "firewall helpers" to help try to manage applications and threats, which has only increased cost and complexity without addressing the core problem. "The Cisco Certified Architect certification may well be the single biggest addition/change to the Cisco certification space since the introduction of CCNA and CCNP in 1998," writes blogger and trainer Wendell Odom. "In the space of two years, Cisco has taken the pinnacle of the Cisco cert space - the CCIE - and added another cert billed as equivalent for Design issues (CCDE), and then made a new pinnacle to the cert pyramid - the new Cisco Certified Architect." But, Odom asks, will this cert really help your career?

Virtualization can deliver dramatic benefits for data centers, but it can also stress the underlying support infrastructure.
