U.S. Men Serve Up Defeat of Italy

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Showing great improvement over Friday, the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team held on to its Pool A lead by defeating Italy, 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21) in an FIVB World League match on Saturday before 4,183 at the Sears Centre Arena.

The victory improves the United States’ record to 7-3. Italy falls to 6-4. The U.S. Men’s National Team will travel to Wichita, Kan., on July 17-18 to play Netherlands in their final World League pool play matches.

Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) led all scorers Saturday with 22 points on 19 kills, one block and two aces. Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) added 11 points on nine kills, one block and one ace. Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) scored 11 points on 10 kills and one ace.

Michal Lasko led Italy with 16 points on 13 kills, two blocks and one ace. Simone Parodi scored 15 points on 12 kills, two blocks and one ace.

The U.S. scored on eight aces as opposed to two for Italy. Team USA also used its serving to get Italy’s setters off the net, pulling it out of system.

“I thought we played with pride, passion and determination,” said U.S. Head Coach Alan Knipe (Huntington Beach, Calif.). “This was a great weekend for U.S. volleyball fans.”

U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team Falls to Mexico

The United States Girls’ Youth National Team fell to a familiar foe at the 2009 Girls’ Youth World Championship in Nakhonratchasima, Thailand when it lost to NORCECA rival Mexico 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) on July 11.

The U.S. was unable to avenge its five-set loss to Mexico that it suffered in its opening match of the tournament.

"Mexico shows strength and power in the match against us," said U.S. Head Coach Jim Stones. "They fought hard. We already played them twice in the championship and lost both matches. I admit that they are stronger than us."
