The Great Mainframe Shakeout (28:46 minutes)
Context applications are the plain-vanilla enterprise apps that are
there for commodity productivity reasons, not for core innovation,
customization or differentiation. IT budget planners are looking at ways
to unshackle these context apps from expensive legacy systems like
mainframes and instead run them on much lower-cost types of infrastructure.

Today's Story Highlights
Windows Azure Graduates Into the Commercial World
Following a month of testing at no cost to customers, Microsoft's
Windows Azure platform will become a paid service on Monday. The Azure
platform is a set of cloud computing services that can be used together
or independently on a pay-per-use basis. Originally unveiled in October
2008, the service has been free for customers during the month of
January.

Taking Airline CRM Efforts to New, Higher Altitudes
Consider the advantages of joining an airline frequent flier program:
The more you travel, the more points you earn. On the other hand, the
more you travel, the more likely your baggage will be lost. Or the
airline will still charge a fee for converting frequent flier points
into a "free" extra trip.

FCC Puts Early Termination Fees Under Microscope
In the last weeks of 2009, the Federal Communications Commission began a
probe into Verizon Wireless' hiked early termination fees for "advanced
wireless devices." The FCC was not exactly satisfied by Verizon
Wireless' explanation of the fees and said its inquiry would continue.
Last week, the next stage of the investigation into early termination
fees began.

Microsoft to Google: Get Ready to Get Grilled in Europe
Microsoft's top lawyer said Monday that Google will inevitably have to
answer questions about its huge market share in selling advertisements
linked to results from its search engine. Microsoft's general counsel
Brad Smith said the search advertising market has become "the
fundamental economic engine for content online" and "the gateway to
content on the Internet."

Windows 7 Launch Sends Microsoft Profits Skyward
PC users purchased record numbers of Windows licenses in the last three
months of 2009, driving big gains for Microsoft over the company's
second fiscal quarter, the first quarter in which the company's Windows
7 OS was on retail shelves. For its quarter ended Dec. 31, Microsoft
reported net income of $6.66 billion, or 74 cents per share, from $4.17
billion, or 47 cents a share, a year ago.
