Google Analytics Benchmarking Newsletter

Google Analytics Benchmarking Newsletter
2011, Volume 1, July 2011

Google

1. Introduction

Welcome to the first volume of the Analytics Benchmarking Newsletter!

This month, we are replacing the standard "benchmarking" report in your Google Analytics account with data shared in this newsletter. We are using this newsletter as an experiment to surface more useful or interesting data to Analytics users. Data contained here comes from all websites which have opted-in anonymous data sharing with Google Analytics. Only those website administrators which have enabled this anonymous data sharing will receive this "benchmarking" newsletter.

You may be wondering, how many websites are in this "anonymous data sharing" pool? Currently, hundreds of thousands, and we've endeavored to make all of the metrics here statistically significant.

The date range of comparison for this newsletter is from November 1, 2010 - February 1, 2011. Comparison is done with data from November 1, 2009 - February 1, 2010. Absolute metrics such as total # visits, pageviews, or conversions for all opted-in websites are not reported.

To simplify the prose, the phrase "websites" will represent "websites which have opted into anonymous data sharing with Google Analytics" for the rest of this newsletter.

2. Site Metrics

Compared to a year ago, websites have seen reduced pages / visit, average time on site, as well as bounce rate.

11/1/09 - 2/1/1011/1/10 - 2/1/11Difference
Pages/Visit4.94.5-0.4
Bounce Rate48.2%47.0%-1.2%
Avg Time on Site5:495:23-0:26

2.1 Breakdown by Geography

Our anonymous database has aggregated geographic breakdown at the country level. Here are a few representative countries and their respective aggregate metrics. The first number in each cell represents the metric for the date range 11/1/10-2/1/11. The parenthesized number is the Year over Year delta compared to a year ago.

CountryPages / VisitBounce RateAvg Time on Site
United States4.7 (-0.1)42.5% (-6.1%)6:06 (-0:10)
United Kingdom4.9 (-0.3)41.5% (+0.2%)5:38 (-0.27)
France4.4 (-0.4)49.7% (+1.4%)4:40 (-0:08)

China4.1 (-0.1)58.2% (+1.0%)3:46 (+0:37)
Japan3.9 (-0.1)48.6% (-9.0%)3:47 (-2:59)

For bounce rate, the distribution by country is plotted below:

The distribution above is annotated with some countries -- which seem to indicate a story of leisure and stage of economic development. For a related metric: average time on site, the distribution by country is plotted below:

The type of countries annotated in the average time on site graph above seem to be in reverse order as those in the bounce rate distribution.

2.2 Breakdown by Traffic Sources

Traffic sources below are identified by how the "source" and "medium""" parameters are received by the Google Analytics collecting servers. Here is an article describing what these designations refer to.

Traffic SourcesPages / VisitBounce RateAvg Time on Site

CPC Search5.6 (+0.0)41.4 (-1.7%)3:57(+0:07)

2.4 Conversion Rate Distribution

Many marketers' favorite metric is conversion rate. Here is the worldwide distribution of Google Analytics "goal conversion rate" by country.

Would anyone have guessed that states which are known for conversions are also high for their citizens' goal conversion rate? Note that for some states with few population, the statistical significance of the conversion metric comes into doubt.

3. Traffic Sources

Traffic sources below are identified by how the "source" and "medium" parameters are received by the Google Analytics collecting servers. Here is an article describing what these designations refer to.

Google's Social Blowout (14:35 minutes)
In this episode: Google gives social networking another go with Google+;
Amazon swiftly severs ties with its California affiliates immediately
after the state enacts a law that would turn many online retailers into
California state sales tax collectors; the U.S. Supreme Court strikes
down a state law that would impose criminal penalties on video game
vendors caught selling violent games to minors; News Corp. boots MySpace
out of the house after six years and hundreds of millions of dollars in
losses; Microsoft sends its latest set of office tools skyward.

Today's Story Highlights

US Phone Buyers Dump Dumb, Get Smart
Nielsen's latest statistics on smartphone sales in the U.S. are more
than a little eye-catching. They suggest that an important tipping point
is on the horizon: The majority of mobile phone users will soon own
smartphones, as opposed to feature phones. The majority of cellphone
users still own feature phones, Nielsen says, based on its May survey of
mobile consumers in the U.S.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/72792.html

Google+ Could be the Biggest Thing in Social Networking
By now, you've probably heard about Google's limited release of its new
social networking platform, Google+ -- but did you know this could be
the most significant product launch in the brief history of social
media? That may sound like an outrageous statement, but it's true. And
it's valid regardless of whether Google+ proves to be raging success or
a total flop.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/72788.html

Sony's Exec Changes Fail to Impress
Several weeks after the Sony PlayStation Network was brought to its
knees by a massive security breach, the company has decided to clean
house with an executive reshuffling. Among the changes: Akira Sato,
chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, and Ken Kutaragi, honorary
chairman, will retire, effective almost immediately.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/72787.html

Adobe's Vanishing Linux Air Support: Personal or Strictly Business?
Adobe's recent decision to pull support away from Air for Linux might be
the first in a series of market adjustments designed to throttle its
bottom line with Android rather than the traditional Linux platform. But
the move could cost the company a bankroll of good will. Adobe
officials do not see their action as hampering relations with the Linux
community.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/72785.html

MyCyberTwin: Your Customer Service Fantasies Fulfilled
Imagine a customer service agent who can do virtually no wrong. She
typically answers questions in about three seconds, with an astonishing
94 percent accuracy rate. She puts callers at ease, offering them
information about related issues without making them listen politely
through an entire spiel or pressuring them to buy. She's unruffled by
verbal abuse, and she's fluent in many languages.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/72760.html

Spurned Affiliates Gnash Teeth Over Calif. E-Commerce Tax Law
California Governor Jerry Brown signed a law Wednesday that will require
Amazon.com and other Internet retailers to collect sales tax on goods
sold to California residents. In response, Amazon sent a letter to its
affiliates in California terminating their relationships. Affiliates are
companies that sell goods through Amazon.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/72781.html

The Enterprise 2.0 Global Delivery Model Transformation, Part 3
Three key aspects of the resourcing paradigm will undergo a change with
E2.0: resource geographic spread; team constitution; and skillsets
required. With the availability of collaboration media and their ease of
access, customer groups and IT support/delivery groups will operate out
of their own locations without the need to work in a centralized
fashion.

Today's Story Highlights

Gmail Goes Under the Knife, Other G Products Next in Line
Google is making over the interface on its Gmail email service as part
of a larger overhaul of the look and feel of all its offerings. The
renovation project will be ongoing over the next several months,
according to Chris Wiggins, creative director of digital at Google.
Google's emphasis in the redesign will be on focus, elasticity and
effortlessness.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72793.html

Google+ Doesn't Quite Add Up to a Social Powerhouse
Fresh off failure from its first social network attempt, Google decided
it'd give the tech trend another shot and launched Google+, the
company's hope for rivaling networking leaders Facebook, Twitter and
LinkedIn. I was lucky enough to be able to give Google+ a trial run and
play around with the site before unlimited users are allowed in.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72791.html

New Botnet: The Horror of the Many-Headed Hydra
A new malware package is running wild on the Internet, according to
Kaspersky Labs, and its creators are attempting to create an
indestructible herd of zombified machines. The botnet has been dubbed
"TDL-4," which Kaspersky describes as "the most sophisticated threat
today." The creators use the same methods as legitimate Web-based
businesses to spread -- they pay affiliates to install the malware.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72786.html

Can Apple Learn a Thing or Two About Handset Design?
With the highly anticipated iPhone 5 coming out soon, predictions of new
features are everywhere. Though Apple is quick to sue copycats looking
to improve their products by adding Apple-inspired features, it might
not be a bad idea for the company to ask itself, "who can we copy?"
Upgrading features is not exactly copying, though -- it's more like a
natural progression.

Google+ Privacy Complaints - Faint Voices in the Wilderness?
Not even 24 hours had passed following Google's sneak preview of its new
social networking initiative -- Google+ -- before the grumbling began.
Briefly, one of the key features of the service, which is still in
field-test mode, is +Circles, which allows users to group people into
different classes or categories such as work friends, family and so on.

A few suggestions for destroying the 'indestructible' botnet
There's a new botnet in town, called TDL-4, and security experts are calling it crazy bad: "I wouldn't say it's perfectly indestructible," one told Computerworld, "but it is pretty much indestructible." Google+ Could be the Biggest Thing in the History of Social Networking

Sidney Hill

The Google+ Circles feature enables what's coming to be known as "friend management," which simply means it allows you to create separate networks, or circles, for the people you interact with on various levels. For instance, you can create a circle just for family, while having a separate, private circle for your drinking and poker-playing buddies. You can even put your boss in a circle all by himself.
