Desperately Seeking Data Management (22:39 minutes)
In the world of information management, project collapse is common,
whether it's because of cost, process or the people running the show.
The information architect "has to be a team player, working closely with
technology, because more and more information will be not just
machine-readable, but machine-processable and interpretable," said Build
The Vision's Robert Weisman.

Today's Story Highlights

Google Reveals the Whys and Wherefores Behind Targeted Ads
Google might soon quit surprising you with ridiculously off-target ads
in your search results and Gmail. Or, you may finally find out how they
deliver ads that are strikingly right-on. The search leader has
announced an upcoming feature called "Why These Ads?"
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/73650.html

Yahoo Wheels and Deals Amid Growing Uncertainty
Yahoo may have shelved the prospect of a company sale, or at the very
least pushed the idea to its back burner. Instead, it is reportedly
giving serious thought to selling its Asian assets and redistributing
the proceeds to shareholders via a special dividend or buyback shares.
It has been widely assumed Yahoo was prepping itself for a sale.
Certainly, that was the market's expectation.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/73646.html

Can the Nook Color Find a Niche in the Tablet Market?
Barnes & Noble has sent out invitations to a press conference this week
in New York City. The specific topic of the event, set for Nov. 7, is
unclear -- but it's almost certain the spotlight will be on its Nook. It
is widely expected that B&N will unveil its answer to Amazon's Kindle
Fire -- that is, a 7-inch Nook Color tablet designed to compete with the
Fire in price and functionality.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/73643.html

Federal IT Management Comes Up Short
The inventors of Google began their collaboration in 1996 but did not
adopt the brand name until 1997. The BlackBerry mobile device came on
the market in 1999. And the Clinger-Cohen Act was enacted by Congress in
1996 for the purpose of improving the way the federal government manages
IT. Now, 15 years after Clinger-Cohen, federal agencies are still
struggling to meet the objectives of the 1996 legislation.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/73645.html

White House Pushes Cyberlaw as Online Crooks Frolic
The Obama administration is urging the U.S. Congress to pass
cybersecurity legislation that the White House first proposed in May.
That proposal incorporates many of the ideas of Senate and House
leaders, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt pointed
out.

Today's Story Highlights

Nitro Hackers Rifle Through Chemical Companies' Secret Data
From April through mid-September, with a 45-day hiatus in between,
hackers were busy attacking a series of targets, culminating in the
chemical and defense industries, Symantec has reported. A total of 29
chemical industry companies and 19 others, mainly in the defense sector,
were hit.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73649.html

Is the Mac Pro on Apple's Chopping Block?
Apple's Mac Pro Line could be on its way out, according to a recent
report. If it proves true, the development could leave behind a void in
the company's enterprise space. The powerful, pricey computers, which
start at $2,499, are reportedly suffering from low demand.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73648.html

What Open Source Can Learn From Steve Jobs, Part 2
The blind hatred of Free Software Foundation President Richard Stallman
toward proprietary programs is such that he has given speeches in which
he advocated for software piracy. Stallman wrote this the day after
Steve Jobs died: "As Chicago Mayor Harold Washington said of the corrupt
former Mayor Daley, 'I'm not glad he's dead, but I'm glad he's gone.'"
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73644.html

The Enthralling 'Steve Jobs' - Brilliance, Weirdness, Warts and All
If you are on the fence about whether to buy and read Steve
Jobs
by Walter Isaacson, I have an answer for you: Do it. However,
I should warn you, the book isn't for the faint of heart. It's 656 pages
in the hardcover edition, which translates to a couple thousand on your
iPhone if you buy it as an e-book.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73635.html

Ubuntu Linux to Hit Tablets, Phones, TVs in the Nick of Time?
Ubuntu is already the leading Linux distribution on desktop PCs,
according to DistroWatch, and now it's set its sights on tablets,
smartphones and even TVs as well. Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth
called the move "probably the most significant broadening of scope in
Ubuntu's history."

Editor's Pick: The Enthralling 'Steve Jobs' - Brilliance, Weirdness, Warts and All

The Enthralling 'Steve Jobs' - Brilliance, Weirdness, Warts and All

Chris Maxcer
11/01/11 5:00 AM PT
To most people who recognize his name, Steve Jobs was a tech industrialist who changed the world, for better or for worse, with his uncompromising vision. His official self-titled biography by Walter Isaacson tells stories we're familiar with as well as many we're not. It packs in surprising details as it paints a complex portrait of a man to whom the terms "genius," "idiot" and "trainwreck" could each apply at certain times.
